Your adventure begins from Djerba, this island renowned for its idyllic beaches and its rich culture, its diversity and its tolerance.

At 115 km from Tataouine, Djerba is the ideal starting point for exploring the Berber region.

During this captivating day trip through the Berber region of Tataouine, you will explore numerous ksour (singular, Ksar),both Arab and Berber constructions, which were once fortified granaries serving as food reserves and oil storage.

These remains tell the story of the lives of the Berbers and Arabs in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, providing a fascinating insight into their way of life and traditions.

Tataouine is also renowned among Star Wars enthusiasts, because the name of the city inspired George Lucas' teams in the creation of the planet Tatooine.

Tataouine is widely associated in the memory of the French with the popular expression "go to Tataouine" or "go to Tataouine-les-Bains", a poetic way of meaning a journey to the end of the world.

This expression takes its origin from the former French military penal colony which closed its doors in 1938, located in this desert region where prisoners were isolated.

DAY TRIP PROGRAM TO TATAOUINE AND CHENINI

Pick-up in front of your accommodation in Djerba at 7:30 a.m., and direction to Tataouine.

Photos stop at the Salt Lake, Sebkhet el Melah.

Free time to explore Tataouine, with the possibility of visiting the market (open Mondays and Thursdays).

Visit Ksar Ouled Soltane, famous for its grain granaries, and one of the filming locations for Star Wars films.

Transfer to the Berber village of Chenini.

Guided tour of the Berber village of Chenini, lasting approximately 40 minutes.

Lunch at the restaurant at Guermassa.

Visit Ksar El Ferech.

Visit Ksar Hadada, another Star Wars filming location.

Visit Ksar Hallouf.

Return to Djerba via Ksar Médenine.

The day trip ends at around 5.30pm, with a return to your accommodation in Djerba.

This program offers a complete immersion in the culture, history and unique landscapes of the Tataouine region, with stops at iconic locations, particularly those related to those from Star Wars.

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TATAOUINE AND CHENINI DAY TRIP

We will pick you up at 7:30 am in front of your accommodation, to begin your discovery day trip and make the most of your day.

Along the way, you will cross beautiful olive groves. You will make a photo stop at a magnificent place that offers unique landscapes and different atmospheres depending on the time of day, the salt lake of Sebkhet el Melah.

You will stop in Tataouine for a coffee break and to visit the local market, if it is open, for an immersion in the lively streets of the city, you can also buy pastries, the famous gazelle horns, the local specialty.

You will begin your discovery with a visit to Ksar Ouled Soltane, a superb ksar off the beaten track which will allow you to discover the traditional architecture and history of the region, scenes from Star Wars were also filmed there.

Before enjoying your lunch in a restaurant in Guermassa, you will take a tour of the hilltop village of Chenini with a local guide.

This ancient Berber village is a remarkable site and one of the most visited in the region. Nestled on a ridge, it blends harmoniously into the color of the mountain rock.

You can admire the troglodyte dwellings, built into the rock, and immerse yourself in the authentic atmosphere of this place full of history. The panoramic view from the top of the village is fantastic.

The guided tour of Chenini will last approximately 45 minutes, but you will also have the possibility to extend your visit if you wish, in order to enjoy more of this unique place.

After lunch, you will continue your adventure by visiting Ksar El Ferech, then Ksar Hadada, famous for having served as a filming location for scenes from George Lucas' famous film, Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Then take the road towards Medenine, a crossroads town and one of the last before reaching Ben Gardane and Libya.

On the way, you will visit the Ksar Hallouf, considered one of the oldest ksar in the region. This ksar is now a listed monument.

In Medenine, you will discover the ancient ksar, which is one of the many Berber ksour that you visited throughout the day.

After this busy day, take the road back to Djerba, we will drop you off in front of your accomodation around 5:30 p.m.

During your private day trip, do not hesitate to ask your guide and driver to make additional stops to take photos or enjoy some magnificent places.

BEST BERBERE EXPERIENCE
