In Tataouine, the presence of a former French military prison, closed in 1938, extended into the heart of this desert region. This was where prisoners were relegated, isolated from the rest of the world.
Tataouine, is not limited to this dark page of history. It is also anchored in the Star Wars universe, where scenes from the films were filmed in the region and in Matmata, which you will also visit.
During this excursion through the Berber region of Tataouine, you will discover numerous ksour (or Ksar in the singular), constructions with Arab and Berber influences.
These ksour, formerly fortified granaries, played a crucial role as food reserves and places for storing oils.
These ksour, from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries, are silent witnesses to the life of the Berbers and Arabs, and offer you a fascinating insight into their lifestyles and traditions.
Each stone tells a story, each wall carries the weight of past centuries and the cultural history of the Tataouine region.
